In 1997, an American robotic spacecraft delivered a base station and a small roving probe to Mars. The lander, later named the Carl Sagan Memorial Station, carried a lightweight, 10.6 kg wheeled rover called Sojourner—the first rover to operate beyond the Earth–Moon system. The mission ended in 1998. It was the first successful landing on Mars since the two Viking missions in 1976 and marked the beginning of a series of Mars missions that included rovers.
