Venera 13 was a Soviet space probe launched in 1981 as part of the Venera program to explore Venus. It is notable for transmitting the first recording of sounds from another planet, including wind, landing impact, and mechanical operations.

Venera 13 was identical to Venera 14, launched five days apart to exploit the 1981 Venus launch window. The descent vehicle separated from the cruise stage after a four-month journey and entered the Venusian atmosphere. A parachute deployed and then detached at about 50 km altitude, with air braking used for the final descent. The lander touched down at 7–8 m/s on 1 March 1982 at 03:57:21 UT.

The lander carried a suite of instruments including cameras, an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, a screw drill, a dynamic penetrometer, and a seismometer. After landing, it took panoramic photographs and obtained surface samples via a drilling arm. The samples were analyzed in a sealed chamber at 30°C and 0.05 atm, revealing a composition of weakly-differentiated melanocratic alkaline gabbroids. The lander operated for at least 127 minutes despite temperatures of 457°C and pressure of 9.0 MPa.

The cruise stage acted as a data relay before continuing into heliocentric orbit, where it made X-ray and gamma-ray observations. It provided data until at least 25 April 1983, and its engine was activated on 10 June 1982 to support the later Vega mission.
