Venera 7, a Soviet probe in the Venera series, made history on 15 December 1970 by becoming the first spacecraft to achieve a soft landing on another planet and to send data back from its surface.
Its lander was built to withstand pressures up to 18 megapascals and temperatures of 580 °C, far exceeding the conditions then expected, because uncertainties about Venus’s surface environment led engineers to include a generous safety margin. This heavy reinforcement limited the mass available for scientific instruments on both the lander and the interplanetary bus. The bus carried detectors for solar-wind charged particles and cosmic rays, while the lander had temperature and pressure sensors plus an accelerometer for measuring atmospheric density. A radar altimeter was also on board.
Launched from Earth on 17 August 1970 at 05:38 UTC, the probe consisted of a 3MV-based bus and the lander. Two course corrections were made during the flight using the bus’s KDU-414 engine.
Entering Venus’s atmosphere on 15 December 1970, the lander stayed attached to the bus during initial entry so the bus could keep it cooled to −8 °C as long as possible. It was released when atmospheric buffeting broke the bus’s lock with Earth. The parachute opened at 60 kilometres altitude, and atmospheric tests showed the air was 97% carbon dioxide. The parachute was initially reefed to 1.8 square metres, then opened to 2.5 square metres 13 minutes later when a reefing line melted as designed. Six minutes after that, the parachute began failing, causing a faster descent. It eventually failed completely, and the lander fell freely, hitting the surface at about 16.5 m/s at 05:37:10 UTC, at coordinates 5°S 351°E.
The probe seemed to go silent on impact, but recording tapes kept running. Weeks later, radio astronomer Oleg Rzhiga found another 23 minutes of very weak signals on the tapes. The spacecraft had landed, likely bounced onto its side, leaving its medium-gain antenna misaligned for proper transmission.
Venera 7 transmitted data for 53 minutes, including about 20 minutes from the surface. The surface temperature was measured at 475 ± 20 °C, and using that with atmospheric models, pressure was calculated at 9.0 ± 1.5 megapascals.
